Atopica for dogs is a non steroidal treatment for long term care of atopic dermatitis. Atopica contains cyclosporine, an immunosuppressive agent used to treat diseases and disorders caused by an overactive immune system.
Dogs (at least 6 months of age and weighing at least 4 lbs)
Atopica is used to treat itching and skin lesions caused by atopic dermatitis, inflammatory bowel disease and other dermatological conditions. Atopica is safe for long term treatment without some of the side effects associated with steroids.
Atopica is not for use in breeding , pregnant or lactating dogs. Do not use Atopica if your pet has a history of cancer. Make sure to tell your veterinarian what other medication or supplements you are giving to your pet. Quite often your veterinarian may prescribe two different medications, even if a drug interaction may occur. In this case, your veterinarian may vary the dose and/or monitor your pet more closely. The following drugs can potentially interact with cyclosporine: gentamicin, amphotericin B, ketoconazole, erythromycin, cimetidine, phenobarbital, and phenytoin. Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences any unusual reactions when different medications are given together. Allergic reactions to medications may occur. Be sure to inform VetSource and your veterinarian if your pet has any known drug sensitivities or allergies. If your pet displays symptoms of an allergic reaction, call your veterinarian immediately or go to a veterinary emergency clinic. Symptoms may include but are not limited to: swollen lips, tongue, face, airways; difficulty breathing; agitation; profuse salivation; vomiting; widespread hives and itching.
Side effects may include loss of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea. Your pet may also experience liver and kidney problems. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian.
Atopica should be given orally as directed by your veterinarian.
